Most names of diploma mills are created to sound prestigious. Their marketing strategy are often very misleading as they claim to be endorsed by a fake or dummy accreditation organization. Diploma mills are also known to mislead people to think that their business license is also a form of government endorsement.

In many countries, diploma mills are generally illegal as the diplomas and degrees given by these diploma mills are commonly used for fraudulent purposes. In countries such as Australia, calling an institution a university is a criminal offense as the use of the term university requires the accreditation and approval from the Mister of Education, Science and Training.

These diploma mills are prevalent especially on online education or online degrees. The students are usually given a non standard or lower units of course work while some also allows the student to buy the credentials instead of earning them.

It is very important to check if a certain educational institution is accredited or not. For online degrees, one can call the university or college in order to verify the authenticity of their offered online course. The applicant may also check the state educational board to check if this certain academic institution is registered or if they are accredited.
