A General Education Diploma, also referred to as General Educational Development Diploma, General Equivalency Diploma or simply GED diplomas, are certificates given to those who have passed the General Educational Development exams.

A General Educational Development exam is given to individuals who have not received a high school diploma. Among the most common reasons for not receiving a High school diploma includes immigration, lack of interest in high school, not attending high school because of certain medical conditions, physical disability, financial problems, or personal problems. GED exams were originally designed for War veterans to help them return to a civilian life.

Prior to receiving a GED diploma, an individual must be able to pass certain requirements as set by an educational board. There are commonly five different tests given to the applicant. Test includes Language and Arts Writing Science, Language Arts Reading, Social Studies, and Mathematics. Some GED test also include a exam in Civics. A GED exam also requires the individual to score higher than the 40 percent of the graduating high school seniors. GED tests may also be given to those who have physical inabilities such as blindness as this GED test is available to in audio cassette and braille. GED test may also be taken in Spanish or French.

It has been recorded that more than 15 million individuals have received a GED diploma since the project General Educational Development Exam started in 1942.

A General Educational Diploma is used as a substitute for high school diploma as this certifies that the recipient has high school academic skills. This diploma may be presented to a future employer as it is of equivalent to a official certificate. However, there are some employers who look down at GED Diplomas, this is because they feel that the test is easier and is lower in form than that of a high school diploma.
